Abstract

306,294. Abel, J. H. March 5, 1928, Drilling-machines ; drills and cutters.-A tool for cutting discs from or holes in sheet metal or other material comprises a head 1 having an annular flange to support a cutter 2 which may be formed from a piece of hack saw or band saw blade. A gap is left between the ends of the cutter to receive a bolt 4 passed radially through the flange and carrying a rectangular nut 5 through which the bolt is secured to clamp the cutter. To accommodate cutters of different diameter rings 3, Fig. 4, are used, the, rings having an external diameter to fit in the flange and an internal diameter equal to that of the hole which it is desired to cut. The head 1 is rotatably mounted on a spindle 7 secured at both ends, the upper end receiving a nut 8A attached to a feeding handle 8 and the lower end serving for attachment to the work 11 by means of a tapped or plain hole in the work and nuts on one or both sides of the work. The feed is transmitted to the cutter through a spring 10 and the head is rotated bv means of a non-circular extension 6 thereon and a ratchet spanner 9. The handle 8 may be secured to the spindle 7 by means of a screw 13, in which case the cutter is fed by rotating the spindle in its threaded hole in the work. The feed device may be arranged at the side of the work remote from the cutter. The Provisional Specification states that more than one screw 4 may be used and the cutter may befed by the device described in Specification 222,171.
