Forging nails; forging-dies.-Horseshoe nails are forged from bar stock F in a four-die press, but instead of introducing the bar far enough into the dies E, as at B, Fig. 1, to produce the whole shank at one operation, a shorter length A, which, however, contains enough metal for the whole shank, is introduced. After the action of the dies E, which forces back the bar F, as in Fig. 2, this is again advanced, so that at the second action of the dies E the finished shank b, Fig. 4, is produced. By this means, the metal to be upset to form the head has a quick taper so that it does not buckle during that operation.
