Abstract

25,241. Gõrtner, H. Nov. 4. Forging nails; forging-dies.-Wire is fed to dies e, f, Fig. 9, and held by them while a head is upset; the wire is then fed a distance depending on the length of nail required, and the point is formed by four cutters b, Fig. 10. Two of the cutters b are adjustably mounted on a fixed part II, Fig. 4, while the other two are adjustably mounted on the slide I operated by a cam on the driving-shaft. Similarly the die e is fixed while the die f is cam-operated. The heading- die g, Fig. 1, is advanced by the cam m<1> acting through the lever n, and is returned by the spring k<1> and, if necessary, by the cam m<1> engaging the recess l. The wire is fed by means of a gripping-device p<1> reciprocated by a link q, a lever r<1>, Fig. 3, and a cam u. This cam has fixed and adjustable projections t', t adapted to cause the first and second wire feeds. After the pointing operation, the still-adhering nail is cut away by a lever o<2> operated by a projection on the cam m<3>. To produce nails with long tapering shanks, the cam n is provided with a number of fixed protuberances between the projections t<1> and t, and the tools b, after each wire feed caused by these protuberances, are arranged to act with increasing force, until after the feed caused by the projection t they form the point.
