Acyclic and cyclic hydrocarbons; aldehydes; ketones; acids; oxygen derivatives of hydrocarbons, in general.-Hydrocarbons, chiefly such as are easily liquefiable, and oxygen derivatives of hydrocarbons are obtained by passing carbon monoxide and hydrogen, mixed or not with other gases, in the proportion of at least two-thirds of a volume of the former to one volume of the latter, over a heated catalyst under a high pressure exceeding that of five atmospheres. In examples, the preparation of hydrocarbons boiling from 20‹ up to 250‹ C., of olefines, paraffins, and benzene hydrocarbons, of alcohols, ketones such as acetone, aldehydes such as formaldehyde, acids such as acetic acid and its homologues, and other products is described. In some cases a basic compound is added to the catalyst, and mixtures of two or more catalysts may be employed. The Provisional Specification is not limited with regard to the relative proportons of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Specification 1325/13, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], is referred to.
