Abstract

19,243. Kelleher, J. Aug. 25. Thinning-machines.-A machine for thinning turnips, mangels, &c. comprises narrow brushes mounted longitudinally on a rotary cylinder or drum, which is driven from one or more running wheels and is provided with means for moving it backwards and forwards on its shaft to facilitate the thinning of irregular crops. The wheel 1 is mounted in a frame 3 provided with guiding-handles 21 on an inclined extension 44. It drives the thinner shaft 29 through a large bevel-wheel 2 fixed to the spokes and smaller bevel-wheels 6, 7 supported by a bracket 12. The bevel-wheel 7 may be moved out of gear by means of a rod 14. The shaft 29 is universally jointed and is supported by adjustable brackets 16. The cylinder carrying the brushes 25 may be moved along the shaft 29 by means of a forked rod 22 engaging a collar 23. In a modification, the thinner shaft is driven by a chain from a universally-jointed shaft driven by bevel-gearing. The chain is tightened by adjusting the brackets 16.
