Coal-cutting machines.-In a coal-cut. ting machine, the electric, air, or other motor b. drives the cutter-chain driving shaft k through worm gearing e, f and spur gearing h, j. A clutch w couples the driving-sprocket l to the shaft k. The shaft k is of large diameter and carries eccentrically a pin m<1>, which acts through an adjustable rod 14, ratchet mechanism 16, 17, worm gearing 19, 20, and a cone clutch controlled by a hand-wheel 26, to rotate the haulage drum 21. An adjustable member 23 controls the extent of the ratchet feed. The gear-wheels f, h are carried by a hollow shaft g running on sleeves on a stud 6. The gear j comprises a toothed ring mounted on an annular flange n on the shaft k. The stud 6 and shaft k are held by a cover plate t. The cutter arm z is carried by supports 2 and has a slot 3 through which a post 29 may be passed and fixed to the ground etc.; the cutting-chain is fed into the coal &c. by passing the haulage cable around pulleys 28, 30 and securing it to the post 29. During a cut along a face, sluing is prevented by means of a cable passing over a drum 31 fitted with an adjustable friction brake 32.
