Abstract

21,771. Bambridge, W. G. Oct. 30. Drilling-machines.-In a machine for drilling rock, stone, metal, &c., and of the kind in which the tool spindle is driven from a motor, preferably an electric motor, through planetary gearing, the planet-pinion carrier is normally held from rotation by a frictional clamp, but may slip back during excessive load on the tool, so that the speed of the tool spindle maybeautomatically varied according to the variation of the resistance, without varying the speed of the motor. The drill 4 is feathered to a steel sleeve 3 carrying the internally toothed ring 24 of an epicyclic gear, the planet-pinions 21 of which are mounted on the flange of a brass sleeve 2. The drive is communicated from the motor 15 through a pinion 17 and gears 18, 20 carried by a bush 19 loosely mounted on the sleeve 2. The sleeve 2 is normally held from rotation by a spring band 25, the tension on which is adjusted by a nut 30; but when abnormal resistance is encountered, the sleeve 2 can rotate and so reduce the speed of the drill, while maintaining the speed of the motor constant without overloading. A spring may be provided between the nut and washer 31 to take up wear. The spring band may be replaced by a clamp consisting of a collar, block, &c. formed in sections and clamped to the sleeve by bolts and nuts, with springs to take up wear. The feed is imparted by a two-part nut 7 hinged at 8 on a spring cap 9, which is frictionally held on a brass cap 14 on the end of the bearing 1 by an adjustable tightening-strap 10 so as to vary the feed.
