Abstract

650,643. Drilling-machines for mounting on vehicles. HOLMAN BROS., Ltd., and SWEET, S. Sept. 29, 1948, No. 25374. [Class 83 (iii)] A rotary drill for attachment to a vehicle and adapted to be driven by a power take off therefrom for drilling vertically into the material upon which the vehicle is resting has an automatic feed-mechanism for maintaining a constant predetermined axial thrust on the drill, and a manually-operable means, movable with or independently of the automatic feedmechanism, for feeding the drill to the surface of the work. The drill is supported by its casing 7 on the chassis 6, 41, Fig. 2, of a tractor and is driven by a chain from the tail-shaft 44 thereof. The drive is transmitted through a shaft 39 carrying a bevel-gear 40 to a composite gear 9, 11 attached to a sleeve by a pin 10 and bolt 12, the sleeve being keyed at 5 to a spindle 66 which carries a cutter-head 1 supporting a drill-bit. A feed screw 72 is supported on a thrust bearing 71 at the upper end of the spindle 66 by a bolt 73 and lock nuts 20 and held against rotation by co-operation between flats formed thereon and a cap 23 on the casing 7. A feed nut 68 engages the feed screw 72 and is driven by a bevel-gear 30 keyed to a shaft 27 which can be operated by a handwheel 18. To provide for power-actuation of the feed nut 68, the shaft 27 has mounted loosely thereon a worm wheel 29 adapted to be clamped on the shaft and against the gear 30 by tightening nuts 16, 17 which act through a sleeve 28. The worm wheel 29 is driven by a worm 69, Fig. 3, formed on a spindle 48 provided at the bottom thereof with a cone-shaped clutch element 51 in engagement with an element 52 which is driven by the gear 11. The elements are held in engagement by a compression spring 56 acting between two thrust bearings 53, 58, the latter being adjustable by means of a stop 64 to vary the torque transmitted by the clutch 51, 52 before slipping occurs. When the predetermined axial thrust on the drill has been reached, the worm 69 rides up the worm wheel 29 to compress the spring 56 and permit the clutch 51, 52 to slip. The Provisional Specification describes also the hand wheel 18 as in threaded-engagement with the shaft 27 and also secured thereto by a spring-loaded detent in the shaft, the drill being fed to the work by hand-operation of the wheel 18 when the increased resistance causes the detent to release the wheel which is then screwed against the sleeve 28 to engage the power feed.
