Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1911.
Application filed .Tune 8, 1910. Serial No. 565,737.
T all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. J. JoIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Emery-l/Vheel Grinding- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in emery wheel grinding machines and more particularly to the manually operated class, the object of the invention being the production of a machine of this character so designed as to render the task of grinding small metallic articles as easy as possible, and a machine which may be readily converted into a power-driven machine.
A further object of my invention is to provide a grinding machine which shall be simple of construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable, and eiiicient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in View my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention in its preferred form, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
The preferred form of my invention as illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings comprises a main frame 1 having a laterally projecting bearing 2 in which the crankshaft 3 is journaled. The machine is designed to be located in the corner of the room and to be secured to the walls 3 and 4 as shown in Fig. 3. The arm 5 carrying the operators seat 6 is adjustably secured in the slot 7 of the frame 1 by means of a set screw 8. Cranks 9 carrying the pedals 10 are detachably secured to the crank-shaft 3 by means of set screws 9. Mounted on the crank shaft 3 is a driving spur gear 11 meshing with the spur pinion 12 which is mounted on the shaft 13. The latter shaft is held in place in the bearing 14 by means of a retaining nut 15 and a check nut 16 as shown in Fig. 1. A drive grooved pulley 17 is carried at one extremity of the shaft 13 and the same is connected to the driving pulley 18 by means of a power transmission belt 19 passing over said pulleys. The grooved pulley 18 is mounted on the emery wheel shaft 2() which is journaled in the bearing 21 located at the top of the main frame 1, said shaft carrying the emery or other abrasive wheel 22. An auxiliary supporting means is provided for the seat 6 in the form of two pivoted rods 23 which have eyelets 24 provided thereon, a cord 25 tied to said eyelets being adapted to hold said rods in any inclined or adjusted position. It will be observed, that slot 7 increases in height from its center to both ends thus permitting vertical rocking of arm 5 and vertical adjustment of seat 6, and that said seat may be vertically adjusted by spreading apart or bringing together the legs 23.
A pulley 26 as indicated by dotted lines is adapted to be secured to the crank shaft 3 and may be used in place of the pedal cranks if so desired, and by means of this pulley the machine may be belted to any ordinary source of power.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the arrangement of parts and details of construction without departing from my invention, and hence I desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as will fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a main frame, of a grinding mechanism mounted therein; a crank-shaft and pedals -for operating said grinding mechanism; a seat; an arm secured to said seat and adjustably secured to said name to this specification in the presence of two Subscribing Witnesses.
GEORGE E. J. JOBIN.
frame, there being a Slot provided in said frame to receive said arm, said slot increasing in height from the Center to each end.; nieans l for looking said arni in said slot; and a Yer- 5 ticaily adjustable support for said seat, sb-
Stantiaily as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my Vitnesses WV. C. SMITH, JOSHUA R. H. PoT'rs.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents` Washington, D. C.
