Abstract
16,116. Florence, J. G., and Grossman, A. July 12. Two - stroke - cycle engines; driving - gear; cylinders, cooling; exhaust-silencers. - In an engine comprising any number of cylinders, but shown as having twelve arranged radially in two planes, the charging-pumps F, with pistons preferably adjustable on their rods, are arranged above the cylinders E and preferably are openended. Either the cylinders or both the cylinders and the crank-shaft may rotate, or, as shown, the cylinders may be fixed and the crank-shaft A rotate in ball bearings b, b', one connecting-rod e<3> of each set being connected with one of two cranks and the remainder of the rods pivoted thereto. Heated air from the region of an exhaust-pipe passes through the pipe m<2> to the carburettor M, thence to the annular pipe N, and through the several branch pipes n and valves n<1> to the pumps F, and enters the cylinders E through valves E<1> in the cylinder heads, remaining above the products which exhaust through terminal ports o, branch pipes, and an annular pipe 0. Cooling-water is supplied by a rotary pump K, a distributor pipe j, and branch pipes j<1>, to the lowest points of the several cylinder jackets J, and passes from their highest points through branch pipes l and a collector pipe L to the radiator R. According to the Provisional Specification, the pipe 0 is preferably divided into sections by transverse plates, and contains an inner annular pipe perforated on that side away from the branch pipes.
