OTTO M. LUNDENE, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
COOLING SYSTEM FOR MOTORS.
Application filed May 31,
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'rro M. LUNDnNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cooling Systems for Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cooling-means for internal combustion engines, the prin cipal objectof the invention being to provide means for introducing air into the water circulating system of the motor to cool the water and also to quicken the circulation thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide an air pumpfor supplying the air to the circulating system with means for actuating the same from the motor.
A further object of the invention is to provide an injector which is connected with the pump and is so arranged in the circulating system that the air will be injected in the same direction as the water is circulating.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim. 1 i
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the air pump.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 2. I
Figure 4c is an enlarged sectional view showing the arrangement of the injector in the circulating system.
Figure 5 is adetail view of the injector.
In these views 1 indicates the internal combustion motor and 2 indicates the r'adia-' tor which is connected with the water jacket of the motor by the pipes 3 and 4c.
In carrying out my invention I inject a supply of air in the circulating system to cool the water and to quicken its circulation and I do this by inserting an injector 5 in the pipe 3, the outlet end of which is provided with a plurality of holes 6 so that 1921. Serial No. 473,842.
there are several, streams of air injected into the water. The injector is so arranged as to deliver the air in the same direction the water is flowing so as to quicken the circulation of the same as well as cool it. An elbow 7 is connected with the injector and passes through the pipe 3, said elbow being provided with a suitable gland to make" a I water tight joint. A pipeline 8 is connected with the elbow andthis pipeline leads to an air pump 9 which consists of the base 10 in which the crank shaft 11 is journaled, the cylinders 12 suitably connected with the base and containing the pistons 13 which are connected with the crank shaft. Each cylinder is connected with. the manifold 14 by a pipe 15 in which is located a check valve 16. Manifold 14 is connected with the pipe 8. The crank shaft is connected by a train of gearing 17 with the fly wheel or other movable part of the motor so that when the motor is operating the pump will be actuated to supply compressed air to the injector. The gears may be of the toothed type or of the friction type as desired and suitable means may be provided forrendering them inactive.
A check valvev in order to prevent water from backing up in the line when the pumpis not operated.
It will thus be seen that a supply of air 18 is placed in the line 8 l is forced into the circulating system while the motor is operating so that the water is prevented from being heated to a high degree and its flow through the water jacket of the motor is qui'ckened.
It is thought from the foregoing decription that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In an internal combustion engine having a water circulation cooling system comprising an air pump for supplying compressed air through an injector andv into the water circulating system, a nozzle having an enlarged extremity, and a perforated face through which the force of air is sprayed in the circulating direction of the water.
OTTO M. LUNDENE.
