Ball and roller bearings. - In a combined roller and ball bearing for car journals, shafting, &c. a ball thrust bearing is placed in an axial recess 40 in a cap 4, and consists of a number of balls 46 between two plates 42, 44. The balls are disposed over the area of a separator 48, formed with a stem 50 engaging a hole 52 in the plate 42 against which the journal 22 bears. A ring 54 driven into a bore in the cap engages a flange on the plate 42 to retain the thrust bearing in the cap. Rollers 16 are mounted to rotate on pins 14 driven into the end rings 10, 12 of a. cage. The rollers contain antifriction bushings 18 separated by washers 20 adapted to receive lubricant. The rollers are separated from each other, and from the rings 10, 12, by washers 17. End thrusts of the cage are taken by balls 26 running in V- shaped races in the rings 10, 12 and in loose flanged rings 28, retained by rings 32, Fig. 3, driven into bores 34 in the cage rings. Rollers 61, running on inclined surfaces, are placed between the bearing casing 1 and a saddle 60.
