Ball bearings.-A thrust or radial-load ball bearing is mounted on a detachable shaft section which, with the balls and ball races, can be removed as a whole. A detachable section 1, Fig. 1, carrying two rows of thrust balls and inner and outer race rings 4, 7, is oi greater diameter than the main portions 2 of the shaft and is secured by bolts 9 passing through shaft collars 3. The outer casing is divided in both vertical and horizontal planes. Ball journal bearings may be mounted on the shaft collars 3, loose disks being placed between the inner races and the rings 4. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the shaft sections 1, 2 are connected by divided grooved rings 20 engaging flanges 21. Keys or wedges are inserted in axial grooves in these parts to prevent relative rotation. A number of thrust bearings 4, 7 may be arranged side by side along the section 1. Fig. 8 shows an arrangement for radial pressure only. Sleeves 29 are moved along the shafts 2 and are secured to the ends of the section 1 by screws 31. Keys or wedges 32 connect the sleeves to the shafts 2. Lugs 35 on the sleeves 29 project into recesses 36 in the section 1. In a modification, the sleeves 29 are divided and flanged to engage grooves in the section 1. The end parts 38 of the casing 6 are cylindrical and may be used to hang up loose driving-belts. Instead of being placed between two shafts 2, the detachable section 1 may be at the end of a shaft.
