Abstract

7635. Roots, J. D. March 29. Securing bearings on shafts. -In a ball bearing to take both journal load and thrust, one of the race rings is divided and held together by a detachable flanged ring. The inner race ring shown in Fig. 3 is in two parts A<1>, A<2>, held together by a flanged split ring J, which is compressed and sprung into position. To prevent the race rings from moving sideways or from rotating relatively to the shaft or outer casing, tongues K are sprung up from the caps and engage notches or recesses in the shaft or the casing. Holes z, Fig. 17, are formed in the flanges of the caps to receive a key, so that, by forcibly turning the caps, the tongues K can be withdrawn from their recesses. Fig. 11 shows a modification in which the cap J<2> is divided into two equal parts, the ends of which are curved and spring into recesses or keyways on the shaft. Fig. 14 shows a modification in which each half cap J has a projection R at each end, and at each side of the shaft W is a flat Q<1> terminating in a lateral keyway Q. The' projections R are slid along the flats and then turned into the keyways. Fig. 17 shows a modification in which the inner cap is divided into three segments J<3>, the ends of which spring into slots Y' in the shaft. A bearing .having two rows of balls is shown in Fig. 19. The undivided race ring A<3> has an extended central bearing A<4> to take thrusts in both directions.
