Inkstands.-The body is divided into an upper chamber-12, Fig. 1, and a lower chamber 13 by a flanged internally-grooved neck-piece 16 which rests on a seating 14 and is provided with small openings 18 communicating between the chambers, the inkstand further comprising a hollow float or plunger 19, guided in the neck-piece 16, and a cover 22 having a dip-opening 28 registering with the upper end of the neck-piece 16, but permitting an overflow from the neck-piece into the upper chamber 12. In the construction shown, the cover 22 carries a dip-head 27 having a depending flange 26, which engages over the neck-piece 16 and is provided with openings 29, Fig. 5. The action of the inkstand is as follows. When the plunger is depressed by inserting the pen, ink is forced up the grooves 21 of the neck piece on to the head of the plunger, very little ink finding its way through the relatively small openings 18 into the upper chamber 12. When the plunger is released, most of the ink above it is returned to the upper chamber 12 through the openings 29 in the flange 26, a small quantity flowing back through the grooves 21; subsequently, the levels of the ink in the chambers 12, 13 are equalized by a gradual flow through the small openings 18. The inner rim of the dip-head 27 extends inwardly beyond the grooves 21, thus preventing spurting of the ink. The plunger 19 is prevented from sticking to the bottom of the well by forming the plunger with a convex base and the bottom of the well with a central projection 30. The neck-piece 16 is preferably of glass, the flange part 17 being ground to obtain an accurate seating in the offset portion of the body of the inkstand. The invention is set out as an improvement on the inkstand described in Specification 7513/05.
