SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,418, dated July 3, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it knownthat I, STEPHEN USTICK, acitizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Inkstands, of which the following is a specification.

The nature of my invention will be understood by the following description.

I dispense with the ordinary dipping-cup, and have an orifice in the cover of the ink-well for the passage of the pen to and from the ink, and a seat for the lower end of the pen-holder, for the purpose of gaging the thrust of the pen through said orifice, whereby to insure an accurate charge of ink "on the pen, the distance of the surface of the ink from saidseat being regulated as hereinafter described.

A represents the body of the inkstand; B, the ink-well, and C the cover thereof, which is provided with. a downwardly projecting rim, 0, that surrounds it, and is connected with its wall by means of screw-threads, as seen in Fig. 2. There is an orifice, b, for the passage of the pen into the ink-well to receive its charge of ink. It is contracted at one side to form a seat, 0, for the lower end of the pen- 5 holder E, as clearly seen in Fig. 2. For the purpose of having the pen to reach to near the bottom of the ink-well when the cover 0 is screwed down to its lowest positio11,the seat c is sunk below the surrounding surface of 40 the plate f by means of the projection 9. the inner circumference of the projection the corner of said plateis provided with a de pression, h, on which the pen-holder may rest, to determine the angle the pen assumes in taking its supply of ink, so as to have an accurate charge of ink at all times, the angle .being such as would insure a free and easy movement of the hand in the arrangement of the pen to take its supply of ink.

By the means above described the pen may receive such an accurate supply of ink at any of the various heights of ink in the inkwell as to prevent the mishaps which frequently occur in the use of ordinary inkstands by inadvertently taking too much ink in the pen.

The ink-well is provided with a flange, G, around the inner surface of its wall, whereby to so completely inclose the ink as to prevent it passing over the wall and into the screwthreads (which connect the rim of the cover with the wall of the well) by accidental tilting of the inkstand. The flange G has an opening of corresponding diameter to that of the projection g, for the free up-and-down movement of the latter, and it is slightly depressed at this opening to cause any ink that might occasionally pass through the joint to run back into the ink-well.

The inkstand may be cheapened in its construction by dispensing with the adjustable cover 0, and having a permanent or a detachable cover provided with the orifice c. In such case the ink would have'to be occasionally supplied to make up the deficiency in depth.

I claim as my invention 1. In an inkstand, the corer 0, having an orifice, b, of sufficient size to admit of the free passage of the pen, but contract at one side to'form a seat, 0, for the lower end of the penholder E, to arrest the downward movement of the pen, and thus cause it to receive a definite supply of ink, substantially as de scribed.

2. The cover 0, having an orifice, b, for the passage of the pen, a seat, 0, for the pen holder, and a circumferential rim, a, in combination with the wall of the ink-well B, the rim a having a screw-thread on its inner surface, which connects with a like thread on the outer surface of the wall, whereby the cover C is adjustable to regulate the dip of the pen into the ink in the well-B, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
