Description

.T. SCHULZ.
INK WELL.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 12. 190B.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
UNiTED sri-iras PATENT OFFICE.
JOHAN SCHULZ, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
INK-WE LL To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHAN SCHULZ, a citi` zen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink-Tella of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ink wells, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a novel ink well that will not spill the contents thereof when tilted or upset.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive ink well wherein novel means is employed for preventing the evaporation of inlr or a writing fluid. To this end, 1 have devised a durable ink well having a flexible and compressible cover plate or diaphragm employed for fore ing a quantity of ink or writing fluid into a liunnel shaped receptacle from where a por tion of the ink can be removed by a pen point. In connection with the funnel shaped receptacle, I employ novel means for normally retaining the saine in a closed condition, said means also serving to prevent the gathering of an excess amount of inl( or writing fluid upon a pen point.
The detail construction entering into my invention will be presently described and then specifically pointed ont in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation ot' an ink well constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of a funnel shaped receptacle. Fig. 4 is a portion of a nut. Fig. 5 is an elevation of a tube partly broken away and partly in section.
1n the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a cylindrical receptacle having a base 2 and a flanged rim 3, said receptacle being constructed of glass or similar vitreous material.
Fitting upon the rim 3 of the receptacle 1 is a removable flexible or compressible late 4 having a central opening 5 for a tu e 6, said tube having its upper end threaded, while the lower end thereof extends in close proximity to the base 2 of a receptacle 1. When it is desired to fill the latter with ink the plate 4 which constitutes the cover is removed.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Application led June 12, 1908.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
serial No. 438,099.
Mounted upon the cover plate 4 is a sleeve 7 having a bore 8 which serves as a com partment for a coil spring 9. The sleeve 7 is secured to the cover plate 4 by a threaded end of the tube 6 and a nut 10, the latter being mounted upon the tube 6 beneath the cover plate 4.
The sleeve 7 is formed with an exteriorly threaded nipple 11 for a funnel shaped receptacle 12, having a centrally horizontal metallic partition 13 provided with a central opening 14.
The spring 9 Within the sleeve 7 rests upon the upper end of the tube 6 and supports a stopper or closure 15 adapted to normally close the opening 14 of the partition 13. The sleeve 7, funnel shaped receptacle 12 and closure or stopper 15 are constructed of hard rubber.
When the pen point is placed in the opening 14, and the pen holder engages the partition 1B, the receptacle 1Q, sleeve 7, and cover plate 4 will be forced downwardly, and the air within the receptacle 1 displaces the ink or fluid that is forced upwardly within the tube 6, the quantity of ink or fluid entering the sleeve 7 and the receptacle 12 being Sullicient to supply the pen point with ink. 1minediately upon the pen point being withdrawn from the funnel shaped receptacle 19, the closure or stopper closes the opening 14 and the ink contained within the funnel shapped receptacle 12, sleeve 7 and the upper part of the tube 6 recedes into the receptacle 1.
It is thought that the utility and manner ot operating my ink well will be fully understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, and I reserve the right to make such structural. changes as are permissible by the appended claims.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. An ink well comprising a receptacle, a flexible and compressible cover plate carried thereby, a sleeve connected with the cover plate, a depending tube secured to said sleeve and to said cover plate and extending in close roximity to the bottom of said receptac e, a funnel shaped receptacle mounted upon said sleeve, a horizonte partition ca'rried thereby, said partition having a central opening formed therein, a spring located in said sleeve, and a closure supported by said spring for normally closing the openin of formed therein, and a closure for normally m said partition, substantially as describe closing the opening of said partition.
2. An ink Well comprising a receptacle, a In testimony whereof I aHiX my Signature flexible and eompressible cover plete carried in' the presence of two Witnesses. thereby, a sleeve mounted upon said cover n. y plate, a depending tube secured to said sleeve JOHAN DCHUL and to said cover plate, a funnel shaped re- Titnessesz eeptaole mounted upon said sleeve, e perti- MAX H. SROLOVITZ, tion carried thereby and having en opening K. H. BUTLER.
