Stamping; cupping.- A number of buttons. each comprising two or three disks beaded together, a r e simultaneously made from sheets of metal. In a machine for making two - part buttons, the dished lower button-parts are cut out by punches 5 from a metal sheet having dished recesses, which is inserted at 4. The pins on the bolts 3 form or enter previouslyf o r m e d holes in the lower button parts and withdraw these i n t o the dies 2 mounted in the slide 1. At the same time, annular punches 8 cut the larger upper button-parts from a sheet inserted at 4'. and cupping-dies 9 carry them through dies 10 into holes in the slide 6 and press them against dies 7 and pins, carried by bolts, which pierce them. The slides 1 and 6 then move towards one another, the former passing under the latter and the plate 16 which carries the dies 7 engaging grooves 43 in the head 15. During the movement of the slide 1 the wedge 13, Fig. 3, moves the plates 14 apart, and the stops 12 space the dies 2 apart from each other longitudinally so that their pitch corresponds to that of the recesses in the slide 6. The head 15 then moves down causing the dies 7 to bead the button-parts together. The finished buttons are raised out of the dies 2 by the bolts 3, a stripping-plate 20 is advanced, the bolts 3 are lowered, and finally the plate 20 carrying the buttons is returned and, engaging a stop, tips them off.
