Exhaust treating.-In engines having a central exhaust controlled by the piston or by a rotary valve, the valve controlling the admission may also control an auxiliary exhaust which is provided with a stop-valve. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the main exhaust is controlled by the piston 2, and the admission is controlled by the outside edges of a slide valve 4. The space between the heads 4 forms a compression chamber when the stopvalve 6 is closed, and is put into communication with the condenser or the atmosphere when the inside edges of the valve 4 control an auxiliary exhaust. In the former case, by shortening or eliminating the inside laps, the compression fluid may be used in the cylinder to do work during the following stroke. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the main exhaust is controlled by a rotary valve 11, and the valve 4, Fig. 1, is replaced by two valves 12, working transversely in the cylinder ends, the auxiliary exhaust from which is controlled by two stop valves.
