Abstract
4953. Charvieux, A. March 19, 1912, [Convention date]. Variable-speed chain gearing.-In the kind of variable-speed driving-mechanism for cycles in which the chain is adapted to be transferred from one wheel to another on the crank axle or the road-wheel hub, the chain is tensioned according to the gear by a rockable arm 7 carrying guide-rollers and a rail 6 to which a tension spring 1 is connected. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the crank axle carries a large and a small chain-wheel, and for the low gear the arm is tilted up towards the rear so that both rollers engage the chain. When the normal or high gear is desired, the tension of the chain is released by rocking the arm so that it inclines upwards towards the front, and meanwhile the spring slides automatically along the rail to the opposite end to hold the arm in contact with a stop 10; the chain is then placed upon the large wheel on the crank axle. The stop is in the form of an arm 9 with a screw, the head of which is on the inner side. This stop may, however, be omitted, the clip 5 or the stay of the machine then serving as a stop for the front roller.
