4214. McPhie, J. R., and McPhie, M. E. Feb. 19. India-rubber substitutes.-Oils, fatty acids, or glycerides are treated with strong nitric acid, and the thick yellow oil resulting, is dissolved in alkali, and precipitated with acid, redissolved and reprecipitated until a mass is obtained that is no longer affected by alkalies. 25-30 parts of strong nitric acid are added in portions to 100 parts of oil at ordinary temperature. The resulting oil is washed and dissolved in alkali, and the solution is warmed. The solution is made just acid, or if ammonia has been used, the latter is boiled off, and a precipitate is produced. The mass is successively dissolved and precipitated until a mass is precipitated that is no longer affected by alkalies.
