3408. Constantinesco, G. Feb. 10. Diaphragm pumps; actuating by pulsating fluid pressure.-A diaphragm pump more particularly for pumping petrol &c., but applicable also for pumping gases, is provided with an elastic metal disk or diaphragm clamped between two lensshaped plates of such a form that, whatever pressure may be applied on the actuating - side of the diaphragm, the stress thereon shall at no point exceed the elastic limit of the metal. In the pump shown in Fig. 1, the actuating-side of the metal diaphragm e is placed in communication with the cylinder of an internal-combustion engine or steamengine by means of the passage i, the return strokes of the diaphragm being produced by the elasticity of the metal. The plates c, d, forming the diaphragm chamber, are shaped to conform to the natural curve of the metal disk when under a pressure below that at which it would take a permanent set, so that however much this pressure may be exceeded on the actuating side, no damage will be done to the diaphragm.
