Abstract

Discharging retorts.-In an apparatus for discharging zinc and like retorts and muffles by a current of steam, the end of the supply pipe a is surrounded by a chamber c having a rearwardly-directed discharge orifice d. When used in hot retorts, water may be supplied through the pipe a and converted into steam by contact with the hot walls of the chamber c. The head b is preferably tapered as shown, and ribbed to facilitate insertion into the retort, and auxiliary discharge orifices e, e<1> may be provided so that the materials are loosened before being acted upon by the main stream from the orifice d. The supply of steam or water can be regulated by a valve g, and an exhaust pipe h concentric with the supply pipe a may be provided to carry off surplus fluid.
