Abstract
326. King's Norton Metal Co., Bayliss, T. A., and Brownsdon, H. W. Jan. 6. [Cognate Application, 2713/13] Gun cartridges; projectiles. - Relates to jacketed bullets comprising a lead or other soft core and a jacket of cupro-nickel or like fouling-metal or alloy, the cylindrical part of which takes the rifling. According to the invention, the bullet is provided with an iron or steel ring or band of about the same diameter as the part of the fouling-metal jacket that takes the rifling, this ring or band having the effect of removing the fouling left by the cupro-nickel in the gun barrel. In the form shown in Fig. 1, an iron or steel ring c is pressed over the cupronickel jacket b and the surface of the ring is grooved to increase its fouling - removing capacity. In a modification, the cupro-nickel jacket stops short of the base, and the jacketing is completed by the iron or steel ring. In other modifications, the cupro-nickel and the iron or steel surfaces are formed by electro-deposition, and the iron or steel surface by the partial removal of a copper or lead coating initially applied to the whole surface of a jacket of iron or steel. In yet another modification, Fig. 4, the iron or steel ring c is applied to the base of the bullet. Finally, the iron or steel ring may be in the form of a separate wad preferably comprising a core of jute as shown in Fig. 6.
