Buoyant furniture.-To render a mattress more rigid for use as a buoy, it is provided around its lower edge with a stiffening-frame 2, which is preferably of metal and is made in four angular sections. The ends of these sections are connected by rods 4, the joints being preferably made rigid by shrinking the tubes upon the rods ; or sliding joints may be provided. The mattress is enclosed in the usual ticking, and is preferably enclosed in a waterproof cover 5, to which the frame 2 is secured. The covering may be made in quarter sections which are sewn tightly together along the seams 9. The mattress is provided with loops 12 and with ropes 14, by which passengers may be lashed to it. Two mattresses may be secured together one above the other with the frames 2 outermost.
