Reciprocating - saw machines; tree-felling. -A portable machine saw, such as employed for cutting or trimming logs or for felling trees, comprises a frame a on which is mounted two parallel hollow shafts n carrying pulleys p to which the saw q is secured. The shafts n are rocked to reciprocate the saw by a chain l having a resilient link o connected to a slide k, which is reciprocated in a guide-way i by a crank g and connecting- rod h. The crank g is rotated through gearwheels c, d, e, f from an electric motor b. In order to feed the saw, the wheel f is fitted with a friction surface contacting with a friction-wheel y splined to a shaft t which rotates, through bevel-gearing s, oppositely - threaded screws r in the hollow shafts n. The pulleys p carrying the saw are connected to nuts on the screws r by means of screws v passing through slots n<1> in the shafts n. The rate and direction of the feed is controlled by altering the position of the wheel y relatively to the wheel f by means of a handlever z. Owing to the screws r being oppositely threaded, the saw rocks as it reciprocates. The shaft may be operated to raise or lower the saw by hand-gearing x, w.
