Peat, preparing.-In drying peat by the simultaneous or alternating use of mechanical pressure and a vacuum, the pressure or vacuum or both are applied in stages, and in the pauses between these stages the mechanical pressure is removed, or the atmospheric pressure is restored, or both. A press for the purpose comprises a perforated container a in which the peat is held by a removable cover h. The mechanical pressure is produced by a perforated piston e, and the vacuum is applied through an opening f in an outer casing b. Perforated pipes d and a water outlet g are provided.
