Making and finishing building-blocks; waterproofing blocks; compound blocks.-Insulating building-blocks are formed by uniting thin plates of a plastic fire-proof material to form casings, which are filled with insulating material, such as peat, peat waste, saw-dust, kieselguhr, cork waste, &c., and are completed by cementing on cover plates, using as cement the same material composing the casing. The composition for the plates consists of asbestos and waterglass, with or without the addition of carbonate of lime and acid substances such as acetic or phosphoric acid, or sulphates of iron, aluminium, &c., or acid phosphate of ammonia, a suitable proportion by weight being 1 part of asbestos, 1 part of chalk, 50 parts of water-glass, and sufficient acid &c. to form a pasty mass. The casings may be made very thin at some parts, so that in case of fire they may crack and allow any gases to pass out of the filling-material. The plates may be corrugated, and either the plates or the casings dipped into tar, asphalt, pitch, mineral or fatty oils, &c. for waterproofing. The blocks may be formed by first filling wood &c. cases with the insulating material, and coating the cases with the fireproof material, in the form of plates or otherwise.
