Abstract
25,029. Galloway, H. L., and Frame, W. J. Nov. 1. Wood, preserving.- Apparatus for impregnating wood with creosote &c. comprises a tank a, a shaft c mounted on the sides of the tank, plates d, c mounted on the shaft and perforated to receive open - ended cylinders g for holding the wood, and a mutilated pinion k for intermittently rotating the plates and cylinders through a series of operative positions 1 to 10, so that, during one revolution of the plates, the wood is charged into the cylinders, immersed in the creosote, subjected to pressure during immersion, exposed to vacuum on emersion, and finally discharged The cylinders are charged in position 1 by means of an hydraulic ram which slides along a plate to which the sleepers &c. are carried by endless chains, so that the entering sleepers discharge the previously treated ones on to endless chains. The charged cylinder then moves through the positions 2, 3 to position 4, where the ends of the cylinder abut against chambers x, y in the sides of the tank provided with packing- rings z, which press on the plates d, e. The chamber x communicates by a port 11 with a valve-chest 12 connected by a port 15 with an hydraulic accumulator, so that when the valve 13 opens the port 11 to the chest 12, the creosote &c. in the cylinder g is subjected to the accumulator pressure. The valve then moves so as to connect the port 11 with the exhaust port 14, thereby releasing the pressure in the cylinder. The cylinder then moves intermittently through the positions 5, 6 to position 7, and during its progress through the positions 7, 8, 10 it communicates with vessels 21, 22 connected to a vacuum chamber or vacuum pump. In the position 9, the cylinder is open to the air. In order to ensure accurate register between the stationary and moving parts, a plug 24, actuated by hydraulic pressure from the chest 12, is adapted to enter recesses 26 in the plate c while the cylinder g is in position 4, and to be withdrawn when the pressure in the cylinder is released. The charging-ram is also actuated from the chest 12. The accumulator and valve 13 may be dispensed with by providing an hydraulic cylinder adjacent to the chamber y, and applying the hydraulic pressure direct to the cylinder g in position 4. In a modification, the cylinders g rotate continuously or intermittently round a vertical axis through a series of operative positions above the tank, and the creosote is pumped into the cylinder in one position; in the next position, it is subjected to accumulator pressure; in a third position, the liquid drains into the tank; in the next five positions, it communicates with a vacuum pump; and in the last position, the wood is discharged by falling through a hole in the baseplate. In either form of apparatus, air. or gas pressure may be introduced into the cycle of operations in addition to the operations described above.
