Abstract
23,745. Wante, L. De Wolf-. Oct. 17. Retting.-In a process for opening up, separating, and softening lignified or bast fibres in the raw, spun, or woven state, such as jute, hemp, flax, coco-nut fibre, and like fibres obtained by steeping or retting, the fibres are treated in a caustic oxidizing-bath containing a minimum of 9 per cent. by weight of caustic soda, or the equivalent of caustic potash, and a compound of oxygen and another element or other elements capable of being easily decomposed and acting as an oxidizing-agent in an alkaline solution, such as hypochlorite, permanganate, peroxide, per-carbonate, per-sulphate, perborate, or other per-salt of an alkali, or such a compound as hydrogen peroxide. To the caustic oxidizing-bath may be added soap, Turkey-red oil, or similar products which have the effect of assisting the penetration of the fibres. The fibres may be first treated with a dilute alkaline oxidizing-bath with or without the addition of Turkey-red oil &c., and, after the caustic oxidizing-bath, the material may be treated with an emulsion of soap, Turkeyred oil, or like material employed in textile finishing processes, and an oxidizing-agent, with or without an oil, fat or fatty acid, such as castor oil, cotton-seed oil, olive oil, or the like, a soft paraffin, or a fatty acid such as oleic, palmitic, stearic, ricinoleic, or the like, and if necessary, a halogen substitution product of a hydrocarbon such as carbon tetrachloride, to aid in the retention of the fat in the form of an emulsion. The fibres are stated to be rendered crisp and woolly and to become bleached.
