Abstract

21,313. Lamprey, R. H. B., Lamprey, P. C., and South Metropolitan Gas Co. Sept. 19. Sampling liquids. - In apparatus for testing and sampling liquids, such as ammoniacal - liquor waste, a measured quantity of the liquid mixed with a measured quantity of a reagent, such as a solution of caustic soda, is distilled in a chamber, the supply of liquid automatically controlling the supply of gas for distillation purposes, and the distillate together with corresponding portions or samples of the original liquor being collected in tubes in a clock - controlled rotating table. The liquor is supplied by a pipe a, Fig. 1, to a rotatable vessel s and a vessel b provided with a refrigerating - coil, whence it passes by means of a rotary distributing - funnel c into one or other of the pairs of opposite compartments d<1>, d<2> or d<3>, d<4>, Fig. 3, of the receiver d. The former pair conveys the liquor to, for instance, a pair of distilling-vessels e, e<1>, the latter pair conveys it to waste. In the position of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the liquid supplied to the distilling-vessels fills them to the level shown and then passes out by the tube e<2> and the annular passage surrounding the lower portion g<1> of the mercury-seal into the tube g<4> and vessel i. A siphon i<1> tends to empty the vessel i to a certain level. If the clock-driven escapement q is now actuated, the weight c<6> and drum c<4> turn the distributing- funnel c and table p, and the table in turn rocks the vessel s so as to divert a measured quantity of the original liquor into the tube p<2>. The supply of liquor to the vessels e, e<1> and the vessel i now ceases, but the siphon i<1> continuing to flow uncovers the gas-supply pipe l and the outlet l<1>, thereby allowing gas to enter the gas-holder k and supply the burners f, the upper member of the gas-holder being raised by the gas pressure. This movement closes the mercury-seal g, g<1> and rocks a vessel n<2> so as to supply a measured quantity of caustic soda to the distilling-vessels, and the gas supplied to the burners f being ignited by the pilot-jets m, a measured quantity of the ammoniacalliquor waste is distilled with a measured quantity' of reagent. The distillate passes through a condenser o and is collected in the tubes p<1>. After a given period, the escapement q is again actuated and the whole process is repeated.
