Abstract

16,809. Soc. Anon. pour l'Exploitation des Precedes Westinghouse-Leblanc. Dec. 13, 1911, [Convention date]. Addition to 8527/12.] Balancing moving parts.-Rotary masses intended to be mounted finally in fixed bearings are initially balanced in the manner described in the parent Specification by mounting them in temporary bearings which allow the shaft to choose at any instant its own axis of rotation, and using, instead of mercury, tin or a fusible alloy or mercury with the addition of resin, which, solid at normal temperatures, may be rendered mobile by heating when the shaft is revolving at full speed under working conditions to enable the balance to be effected automatically as described in the parent Specification, being then allowed to cool while the conditions are maintained whereby a permanent balance is effected. The circular channels instead of being enclosed as when adapted to contain mercury, may be in the form of grooves a open towards the interior and secured to the drum &c., as shown in Fig. 1. Where the rotor comprises several wheels, such wheels may be first balanced separately in the manner described above, and then, when assembled, finally balanced by heating again the two end grooves. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) refers also to the use of vaseline to damp the movements of the mercury in the arrangement described in the parent Specification; this subject - matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
