Abstract

The head of the camera tripod has a hemi-spherical housing for the vertical shaft running in the bearing. Three large dia. discs and three small dia. discs are mounted on the shaft and damping rings are clamped between adjacent discs. The damping rings can be held stationary by spring loaded bolts which pass through slots in the sleeve. The housing is filled with a viscous fluid such as silicon grease which creates a viscous resistance to rotation. By rotating the sleeve, the bolts can be withdrawn from each of the ring in turn. This allows the rings to rotate with the discs and so reduce the viscous resistance.
