Abstract

16,949. Soc. Anon. pour l'Exploitation des Procedes Westinghouse-Leblanc, and Leblanc, M. July 20. [Addition to 8527/12.] Balancing moving parts.-In order to damp the movements of the mercury in the device for automatically balancing rotating masses described in the parent Specification, perforated baffle-plates a are placed at equal intervals around the mercury channel or chamber c and are retained in position bv radial grooves b in the sides of the rim forming the external periphery of the channel. For the same purpose, a viscous liquid such as vaseline may be added to float on the surface of the mercury. In each baffle-plate, a small opening c' permits mercury to pass from one compartment to another to attain a position of equilibrium, while the displaced air or viscous liquid escapes by openings d. The mercury is in sufficient quantity in each compartment, and the openings e<1> are sufficiently large to obviate resistances dne to surface tension and capillarity.
