Recoil apparatus.-Relates to trail spades for field guns, and consists in pivoting the spade b, shown in sectional side elevation in Fig. 1 and in plan in Fig. 2, about an horizontal axis c, which axis is carried by a block d rotatable upon a vertical pivot e on the trail a. The front face b<1> of the spade b is spherical, and bears against a spherical transverse wall a<2> in the trail. A bolt h locks the spade in either of two positions, by engaging grooves f, g in the wall a', when the spade is driven into the ground, and a catch i, rotatable by a handle k, secures the spade in a third position by engaging with a projection b<3> on the spade. The vertical pivot e enables the trail to be swung relatively to the spade b to train the gun.
