Abstract

Balance gearing.-Comprises operating-means for the engaging clutch elements fitted on the ends of divided axially-sliding differential shafts to lock the differential gear during straight running of a vehicle. Figs. 1 and 2 show the application to a differential gear of known kind in which a loosely-mounted gear-wheel 8 carries two sets of planet-pinions 12, 15 gearing with each other and with the axle pinions 9, 17 respectively. The hubs of the latter pinions are formed with registering clutch elements 18 to lock the gear. The part 2 of the axle is moved axially against the action of a spring 29 to lock the gear, by means of a bell-crank lever 22 pivoted on a lug on the casing 6 and connected to an operating-pedal by means of rods 26, 27 having an interposed spring 28. With this arrangement, the operator can always depress the pedal to its full extent although the clutch elements may not be in position for immediate engagement.
