Abstract

13,691. Harrison, E. F. June 11. Vegetable ivory; plastic compositions containing viscose.-Phytelephas palm seed (vegetable ivory), or nux vomica seed is ground and incorporated with viscose, to form a material that can be moulded to form buttons, studs, telephone fittings, &c. Powdered vegetable ivory in the proportion of from 80 to 90 per cent is mixed with viscose prepared in the usual manner, or an impure viscose may be used, which is prepared from the vegetable ivory itself by treating it with caustic soda and carbon bisulphide. The dry material or the article fashioned from it may be soaked in water to remove soluble salts, or a solution of perchloride of iron may be added to react with the other materials to form sulphide of iron.
