Abstract

Circular machines.- Patterned fabric is made on machines with rotary needle cylinders or cones and sliding latch needles by the direct application of a pattern chain 13 to the jacks. The jacks 5 are mounted to rock on a rim 6 and their lower ends are operated by the bits carried by the chain, which is geared to the cylinder 1 and passes round rollers &c. which bring it in contact therewith. The needles thus selected are pressed outwards and their butts 9 are taken by cams 10, 11, or 12 so as respectively to tuck, clear or take thread from another feeder 19 according to the breadth of the controlling bit. Unselected needles are not operated, and pass at the level 15. The selected needles pass up to the levels 16, 17, or 18. The cams 10, 11, and 12 are mounted on a slide 23 which can be moved outwards by the same or other pattern mechanism so as to modify or nullify the normal action. The needles are furnished with extra butts 28 which are operated for plain knitting by a cam 29 under control of the pattern chain.
