Abstract

10,127. Holt, H. April 29. Cotters.-The heads or nuts of bolts, cotters, &c. are secured to the stems by pins held in bayonet slots by the action of external springs. A cross-pin e in the bore of the nut d, Fig. 1, engages a bayonet slot c in the bolt a, the ends of the slot being extended laterally in opposite directions, so that, by pressing the nut against a spring f and turning it, the pin c is caused to enter recessed portions c<3> of the slot c. The spring f may be placed between the bolt head b and the work, and in place of the cross-pin e the nut may carry two pins engaging two separate bayonet slots in the sides of the bolt a. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the nut has a central portion provided with pins i engaging bayonet slots j.
