MARVN D. BENNETT, 0F SIDNEY, NEW YORK.
CAR-BUMPER.
Application filed June 3, 1918.
To all lwhom 1f/may concern Be it known that l, MARVIN D. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sidney, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Cardumpers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in car stops and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a spring bumper adapted for arrangement of a railroad track for stopping rolling stock in a manner to prevent injury to the same or the transmission of abnormal or excessive stress thereto or to the bumper and track.
lt is also an object of the invention to pro! vide the bumper with novel means for supporting and securing the saine in proper relation to the track in a manner such as will prevent undue movement thereof.
rll'he improvements in the details and ar rangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying draw* ings, in connection with the specific descrip* tion hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
lin the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved bumper as applied to a railroad track,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.,
Fig. 4: is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section through the bumper proper', and
lfig. 5 is a detail in section through the plunger showing the means for preventing displacement thereof.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like reference characters will designatecorresponding parts throughout the several views, t represents the railroad track to which the improved bumper is attached. A transversely disposed bar or tie is arranged Specification of Letters Patent.
ratentea aan. ii, freie.,
Serial No. 237,919.
is shaped to permit the seating of the same on the shouldered ends 3 of the supports 1, whereupon it is secured in position by passing bolts 5 through the same and the adjacent portions of the supports 1. Diagonally disposedapertured ears G are formed integral with the opposite sides of the housing fl and receive the upper ends of connecting rods 7 therethrough, said ends of the rods beingl screw threaded and having nuts 8 turned into engagement therewith while the lower ends of the same are bent at angles to the body portion thereof and extend downwardly through plates 9 into engagement with the cross tie c of the track t. said by bolts 10 to the web portions of the railsl of the track t. Ubviously. by so connecting the casing of the bumper to the track t, movement of the same either longtudinall \v or transversely thereof, irrespective of the stress applied thereto will be prevented.
Slidably arranged in the casing 4c is a plunger 11, one end of which is enlarged as at 12 and snugly engaged in the bore of said casing while a head 13 is: carried by said enlarged portion and as will be noted. serves as the engaging means of the stop. llhe remaining end of the plunger 11 is extended beyond the casing l and is reduced to permit the passing of an annular locking plate 1a thereover, illustrated in the Fig. 5, said plate having bearing on the adjacent end of the casing` 4, which as will be noted, has the bore thereof reduced to permit the plungerl 11 to be snugly passed therethrough. A coil spring 15 is arranged in the casing 4f about the plunger 11, one end of the same bearing on the rear end of said casing while the remaining end of the same has engagement with the adjacent side of the enlarged portion 12. Hence, it is obvious that the head 13 will be normally maintained in its extended position with relation to the casing 4:.
En using the improved bumper, it of course will be understood that the coupling head or other portion of the rolling stock is engaged with the head 13, thus causing the same to be moved inwardly in the casing l against the tension of the spring 15, thus. cushioning the force of the impact and preventing the imparting of abnormal or excessive stress to the rolling stock or to the bumper and the track to which the same is secured.
By reason of the exceedingly simple' construction of the improved bumper, it will be also understood that the various parts thereof can be readily removed for repairing or to permit replacing thereof, as may be necessary.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and' such modification as is Within the scope of my claims, I consider within the spirit ofmy invention.
I claimt'- l. A car bumper including plunger' slidable in said casing having one end thereof enlarged' and snugly engaged in the bore of said casing, a head carried by the enlarged end of the plunger, the remaining end of said plungerbeing extended beyond the adjacent end of the casing and recess, cushioning' means arranged in the casing engaged with said plunger, and locking means detachably engaged with the recessed end of the plunger arranged adjacent the outer` face of the adjacent end Of the casing.
2. A car bumper including a casing, a plunger slidable in the casing, having one end thereof enlarged and snugly engaged in the bore of said casing, a head carried by the enlarged portion, the remaining end of the plunger being extended beyond the adjacent end of the casing, locking means engaged with said extendedv end of the plunger, cushioningv means arranged in the casing engaged with the enlarged portion of the plunger, diagonal apertured ears formed integral with the opposite sides of the plunger, and means receivable through saidl ears for securing the casing to a railroad track.
8. In a car bumper, in combination, supports, a casing having, the lower portion thereof squared and connected to the upper ends of said supports, diagonally disposed apertured ears formed integral with the opposite sides of said casing, rods received through said diagonal ears and extending downwardly into engagement withI the ties of a track, plates secured'A to the ties of a a casing, a
track and' engaged with portions of saidl rods, a plunger slidable in the casing, a head carried on one end of said plunger, a locking plate engaged with the remaining end of the plunger for preventing displacement thereof, and cushioning means arranged `about the plunger positioned in said casing.
4l. In combination, a bumper including a casing', a plunger slidable therein, a head carried on one end of the plunger, the remaining end of said plunger being extended beyond the adjacent end of the housing, cushioning means arranged in the casing engaged with the plunger, locking means de- 'tachably engaged with the extended end of the plunger, longitudinally disposed base elements for the bumper, a tie disposedI transversely of the base elements forwardly of the bumper, a second tie disposed trans versely of the base elements and receiving the 'bumper thereon, means for connecting the yties to the base elements, and tie rods engaged with said first tie and` extending diagonally upward into engagement with said casing.
5. In combination, a bumper including a casing, supports receiving said casing, diagonally disposed apertured' ears on the opposite sides of the casing, a plunger slidable in the casing having one end thereof enlarged and snugly received in the bore of the casing, a head carried on the enlarged end of the plunger, the' remaining end of said plunger being extended beyond the adjacent end of the casing, locking means engaged with the extended end of said plunger, cushioning means arranged in the casing engaged with the enlarged end of the plunger, longitudinal base elements for the bumper, a 'tie disposed transversely of the base elements and arranged forwardly of the supports, a second tie disposed transversely of the base elements, means for connecting the ties to said base elements, and tie rods eugaged at their lower ends with the first tie and extending diagonally upward into engagement with the apertured ears on said easing.
In testimony whereof, I aiix my signature hereto.
