Abstract
8250. Regaud, C. April 24, 1911, [Convention date]. R÷ntgen-ray tubes. - The hardness of a R÷ntgen-ray tube is regulated by introducing hydrogen through a window of platinum or other metal permeable when heated by the action of the cathode rays. In the tube shown in Fig. 2, the window forms part of a hollow anticathode a connected by soldering or otherwise to a metal tube c. Hydrogen or coal-gas is admitted by an internal metal tube d, screwed or soldered to the tube c, and leaves by a tube o. The window may be in the front or the back of the anticathode, and may be heated by direct impact of the cathode rays, or by conduction from another part so heated. When the main anticathode is water-cooled, the window forms the anticathode of a subsidiary discharge in another part of the tube. The terminals of the subsidiary discharge may be connected to the main terminals by metal tongues and the apparatus arranged so as to maintain a definite hardness automatically; or the subsidiary terminals may be connected independently to an induction coil and the hardness controlled from a distance by a switch.
