Abstract

182,195. Jackson, Sir H., Philpot, A. J., and British Scientific Instrument Research Association. March 24, 1921. R÷ntgen-ray tubes. -The vacuum is regulated by means of a device for controlling the supply of pure nitrogen to the tube, and another device for absorbing nitrogen, both devices being in f r e e communication with the tube. As shown, a substance C for evolving nitrogen, such as boron or other nitride, is contained in a chamber A, and may be heated by a tungsten or other filament D. An electrode G, of a substance such as boron or titanium, which absorbs nitrogen when a discharge passes therefrom to the cathode H, is contained in a glass or silica tube L in a chamber F. Plugs E, M of glass wool prevent the softening and hardening substances from passing to the tube B. The tube L may be supported by projections N or a flange, and by glass wool O. The plug M may be replaced by a curved tube. The nitride may be contained in a glass vessel mounted inside the chamber A.
