R÷ntgen-ray tubes.-In means for automatically regulating the vacuum in R÷ntgen-ray tubes as described in the parent Specification, iron nitride is used as the nitrogen-evolving medium and granular aluminium as the nitrogen-absorbing medium. The nitride may be prepared by heating an iron wire E to a dull red heat in ammonia; which may be carried out with the wire in position in a chamber D communicating with the tube A and before sealing. Aluminium granules M are placed in a tube N with a restricted orifice, and are covered by a plug O of glass wool to impede the absorbing action.
