Column stills; hydrocarbon oils and tars, distilling.-In distilling oils, tars, &c. under reduced pressure in a still composed of inverted cups C and shelves D, so arranged that the liquid is exposed to an ascending current of gas or vapour both while it is spread in films on the cups C and while it is retained in the annular depressions in the shelves D, a uniform temperature is maintained by enclosing the still in an externally-heated casing B and by causing the gas or vapour to circulate through the casing B before it enters the base of the still, as by a pipe N.
