Column stills and rectifiers; hydrocarbons, distilling.-In the fractional distillation of liquids, such as tar, the liquid to be distilled is passed through one or m o r e sections of the condensing- column, and the temperature of the section is regulated by regulating the flow of the liquid through the section, for example, by a thermostat. In an apparatus for obtaining three fractions, the vapours pass from a still i through a column of two sections each consisting of a packed chamber b, and a chamber f through which pass tubes e. The liquid to be distilled is passed from a tank k through the upper chamber f down pipe h, through the lower chamber f and thence by a pipe g into the still i, together with the vapours evolved from the liquid. In distilling tar, the upper chamber is maintained at about 85‹ C., and the lower chamber at about 180‹ C. by thermostatic control, bypass pipes being provided. The upper tube-plate in the chamber f may be omitted so that the vapours evolved from the liquid may mix with the vapours rising in the column.
