Shears.-Jointed instruments such as tongs, pincers, pliers, shears, &c., of the double-lever type are provided with a g r a v i t y catch or links adapted to retain the jaws in open or closed position. Fig. 2 shows a pair of coal tongs comprising jaws E, F pivoted together on a pin G and handles A, B pivoted together at C and connected to the jaws by pins H, J. The link or catch K is pivoted on one of the pins H and is notched at its other end to engage the pin J. When the tool is gripped and directed upwards the link falls into engaging position and is retained in this position by the pressure of the spring D. Fig. 6 shows a pair of links M, N, jointed at 0 and pivoted on the pins H, J. A spring may be employed to control the movement of the links.
