Resistances.-A heating-resistance comprises a coil E of nichrome or other wire lapped round a flat insulating-support A so as to touch only at the edges, where it is straightened out and is preferably retained by equidistant notches a. The support is of a refractory non-hygroscopic substance such as mica or steatite or a combination of these, or may be of metal covered with such a substance; or it may consist of two or more sheets of mica or the like clamped together. In the apparatus shown, a bent metal plate B is clamped over the support at one end and terminals C, D are clamped to the other end. The resistance may be enclosed in a metal tube lined with mica.
