Abstract

3704. Northampton Machinery Co., Collier, J. V., and Edwards, A. W. Feb. 14. Presses, mechanical. -Relates to the starting and stopping mechanism of a cutting-out press and like machine of the type that performs a single reciprocation only for each operation of a starting- treadle, even though the latter be retained in its depressed position. The driving - clutch and brake are operated in the usual way from a shaft 9 rocked by a link 11, which is raised against the action of a spring and locked in this position to declutch and brake the driving- shaft by the engagement with a shoulder 16 on a link 10 of catches 15 on dogs 13 pivoted on a vertically-reciprocable frame 4. The dogs 13 are retained in their locking position by the engagement with their upper ends of a resiliently-supported plunger 17 in the link 10. Depression of the treadle 12 serves, through a spring-controlled finger 19 and detent 20 pivoted to one of the dogs 13, to depress the plunger 17 and allow the link 10 and lever 11 to descend under spring action to remove the brake and to clutch the driving- shaft 3 to start the machine. The frame 4 is then lowered by the action of a cam 1 on the lower part of the frame until the dogs 13 under the action of the spring plunger 17 re-engage the shoulder 16. The frame then rises under the action of a cam 2 on the upper portion thereof, thereby raising the link 10 and connected parts and declutching and braking the driving-shaft. Owing to the pivotal mounting of the detent 20, the machine cannot be restarted until the treadle is released to bring the finger 19 again beneath the detent. A cam on the frame 4 may engage a roller 21 on the finger 19 to disengage the latter from the detent 20, on the descent of the frame.
