Dobbies; jacquards.-In a dobby or jacquard of the kind described in Specification 2523/10, the upper and lower cards, instead of being connected directly to the lifting-hooks c, Fig. 1, are secured to the ends of parts m each embracing a hook c. Each part m has inclined guide-surfaces m<3> m<4> arranged to slide on corresponding inclined parts of the hooks c, so that the part m adjusts itself in line with the pull of the cords. The inclined parts m<3>, m<4> assist the lateral movement of the hooks c under the action of the pattern card or of the returning-spring. The hooks c are adapted to be retained in their raised or lowered positions by rows of catches h, o arranged near the needlebox. Subsidiary blades l<2>, k<2>, Fig. 3, pivoted to the lowering and lifting blades l, k, prevent the hooks c from moving suddenly to the closed, shed position as soon as they are unhooked from the catches h, o. The blades l<2>, k<2> are carried by arms l<3>, k<3>, which are pivoted to the blades l, k and are controlled by fixed cams l<6>, k<6> so that they engage beaks c<9>, c<10> of the hooks c until the hooks reach their closed, shed position.
