Abstract

1259. Cooper, J. F. Jan. 16. Tread bands, projections, and surfaces. -In inextensible treads for pneumatic and other resilient tyres comprising alternate hard and soft parts which are arranged so as to be circumferentially, but not transversely, flexible, and which compress or deform the tyre so that it exerts an outward pressure thereon, the soft parts b comprise ribs or studs having one common base a or arranged in groups having common bases, and the hard parts comprise metal bars or the like c filling up the spaces between them. The base-part may cover the sides and tread, or the tread only of the tyre d, and may be integral with the tyre, or be vulvanized or cemented thereon or be held by frictional contact therewith. The tread surface may be smooth, or the hard and soft parts may be formed to give a ribbed, studded, or like surface. The tread may be made inextensible by one or more spring steel tapes, wires, or chains e passing through the parts b, c, or by connecting the hard parts by means of links; or the hard parts may be formed with apertures to receive the soft parts and be hinged together or otherwise interlocked.
